Commons are decentralised by definition. They are an explicit alternative to centralised hierarchies or monopolies. For this reason, they may seem scattered and fragmented. But the commons are not a marginal phenomenon. The commons are everywhere.

This is the starting point of the idea by artist Natascha Hagenbeek to cocreate a commons flag. In a work session at her studio, we will help design a flag of the commons. Natascha will take us through the symbolism of flags and will discuss with us commons values and visual language. She will invite you to come up with you own flag design, with some inspiration ready of course (see the flags hereunder, for example!).

A flag contributes to a common identity of the commons and symbolizes the movement. Where will the flag fly? We hope to distribute it across Amsterdam soon, and then the world!

Biography
